With all my 35+ years of breeding Chihuahuas, there are a few do’s and don'ts when it comes to
bringing a new puppy home. New home stress for a puppy and its new owners will probably be the
roughest few nights you’ll have to go through trying to make a smooth landing with the new love in
your life. Most of the time the whole stress thing goes very well while the puppy is adjusting to his
new family. But just like a new baby there's usually some growing pains we all have to go though with a
new puppy until the puppy gets over the new home stress, which could take up to a week or so.
Time and patients is the key ingredients here.

Now, to make sure that the love gets a chance to cultivate itself……
There are the don’ts that you will definitely not do. A slight slip up here on the first day could cost you
your level of tantalizing love emotions for the little bugger to boil over with steamed hatred, causing a
nuke melt down to go off inside of you. You'll fine yourself having thoughts of seeking a quick divorce
settlement to rid yourself of your sweet little furbie.

O.K. Let’s get to the heart of the matter. We all want that cute puppy right? But what we don’t want is a
crying puppy keeping us up all night, which is really not all night in most cases, but It really can feel
that way for a person that has to get up early for work, and their sleep is being broken by the
Yippee ki-yay!!!!...., whales of a crying puppy.

Day one, first let me say yes, I’m a firm believer of crate training. I like the large size pet taxi. Any crate
smaller is a waste of your dollars. There’s no better way then this type of training for a puppy, For a
Chihuahua puppy, this little house becomes it’s home where it will learn to hang its heart in time. A
safe house so to speak, where the puppy will find comfort and warmth. A place away from the hustle
and bustle of a busy house (if you have one) or just a clam couple with little or no noise in the house.
Your puppy must be put in it's crate at night to sleep. Preferably in an isolated area away from sight of
the family. Line it with news paper. Use a plastic shoe box for a bed, placing an hand towel in it for
comfort. Put a small stuff animal in the box. The puppy will use it to snuggle up to. Let the puppy lap a
little warn milk with vanilla extract in it before he goes to bed. This should help him fall into a tight
sleep. I like the continuous dry feed method, and all my puppies are left to feed on demand and I think
you should not change this type of feeding for a least a week or so.

Use a flat double cat dish. Feed in one side, a little water in the other and put it in the back of the
create....Why? Because if you put it up front the puppy will step in the water when he comes to the
front to look out of the crate. The bed shoe box should be right up front, where the puppy will want to
be. Later when the pup is sleeping through the night, you can then change this arrangement, leaving
the food/water out of the crate through the night. You can also move the location of the crate to a
more integrated area. Time varies with every pup, so time will tell if you have an easy pup or the one
that needs a little more time. Again, time and patients will help to get the job done.

I highly recommend a puppy play pen for the puppy’s daily romp room. This can be a used baby’s pack
n play, they really work the best. You’ll have to line the bottom pad with some type of flooring so to
make it pee pee proof... I like to use news paper over a piece of vinyl flooring that I cut to fit  the
bottom pad. News paper goes through a process that sterilizes it and it’s a great way to keep the cost
down.

Chihuahuas really learn to use a litter box quite well and when you put the box right in the play pen, it
becomes an easy mark for the puppy to hit.  I like to use the two foot long under the bed blanket box,
they do work the best. You’ll feel the feelings of over enjoyment when you witness your puppy
unloading a breath taking blast of dynamite for the first time in his new out house you so graciously
supplied for your honored guest. We humans can get so appreciative over the most simplest forms of
pleasure. As he becomes a little older you can put his bed right in there to, when he’s around twelve
weeks of age. Anytime sooner, most of the time……the bed could become his litter box.
Older pups have a little better house keeping skills.  But don't worry if you have to deal with a few
mishaps, this will all jell over in time. Some people are just better at training a dog then other, but with
this type of a system failure is a hard thing to come by. Still, if your the type of dog owner that insists
on letting your puppy have the run of the house.....,weep and wipe-it ,and then invest in a good rug
shampooer, your going to need it. Puppies that develop bad litter habits when their young will never
become fully house broken, and you'll have nobody to blame but yourself. Try to think more in the lines
of....,would you let a six month old toddler crawl around the house without a diaper on? No brainer,
right? Look, it's the same Sh!t, different smell!......so don't be a silly dilly, or you'll be looking up
Chihuahua rescue groups someday, when you try to kick your furry rug rat to the curb.

Please read the next paragraph carefully. If you listen to what I have to say here, it could make a world
of difference. Never take your puppy out and ruff house with it when it’s just a very young puppy.
Why?....Because once you make a hyper nut out of him, by tugs of war with pull toys, ball throwing,
pinching him on the snout to get him to snap back at you, which is a form of teasing (something I highly
disapprove of),….You'll be opening a big can of worms for yourself if you play like that, a very young
puppy can pick up bad habits that will last a lifetime. What we all want is a nice calm, manageable, well
behaved puppy that will grow up to be a proud member of the family. A dog so easy to love that it will
break your heart if he ever goes away.

To achieve this goal all you have to do is take your puppy, go sit on the couch, (when your watching
television would be a good time). Place him on your lap, if your puppy wants to greet you and wants to
jump up and lick you, let him get all his anxiety out, tell him what a good boy he is. Tell him that you
love him while you give him kisses right back. Than let him sit on your lap for a bit, calming him with
light petting, not to the point where you keep going over and over the same spot because this can
become annoying to the young pup and some of them will give you light puppy snarls letting you know
that he doesn't appreciate the feeling. Try to move just your finger tip over the puppy's body. As if you
were giving it a light tender massage. Get to know your pup by feeling his whole body. Let this period
go on for some time. You should now start to see signs that the puppy is becoming more and more
comfortable with your touch. Now, try to gently roll him on his back, at this point he should be laying
as if you are cradling him in your arm so he’s feeling very secure with both of his sides in a sung fit.
He’ll have no fear of falling. You are now going to start gently finger stroking his area between the
front legs, the chest area. All puppies/dogs love this feeling and should respond to your touch with
their eyes falling into a sleepy expression. After you have him in a complete hypnotic state, you can
now start to massage his paws. Rub them gently, the lighter the touch the better. Separate the toes
with your finger tips bringing your pointer up though each and every toe. This will later help when you
try to cut his toenails.

Your puppy is now in a state of complete submission. And you will feel like falling a sleep as well.
This should be done at least once or twice a day. In time you will be able to turn your Chihuahua over
on his back and lay him on the palm of your hand and do this technique and they will lay there and
stretch their bodies out with complete trust that you will not let them fall.
Later on down the road when you have his temperament set, when he’s set in his good ways, you can
start a little ruff housing, if he even cares for that nonsense at that point. Since Chihuahuas like to
sleep like no other breed, up to sixteen hours a day. Love is all you need.

There is another stress point that I would like to mention. All puppies have to go through coat
transition....better known to breeders as blowing their puppy coat. Around this time their natural skin
mite, known as the demodectic mite can get the better of them as their resistance drops. Most of the
time puppies get through this bump in the road quite nicely and their adult coat comes in as the puppy
fur drops out. You will notice a uneven look to their fur and they may try to scratch at themselves. It's
really nothing to worry about. However....I know how you feel about your new puppy itching. It makes
me stress out too. I wish all puppies didn't have to even go through this, but just like teething, it's par
for the course . Vets do recommend that you don't do any chemical treatment, and that It's better for
the puppy to get use to this mite on it's own. Your pup will be find when his resistance builds back up.
A lot of this is brought on by the new home stress bit. Thank God all things come to pass. Murphy's oil
soap is the best all natural remedy to wash puppies with. I will say in my years of puppy raising 75% of
the time you can hardly notice coat blowing taking place at all, Still, some puppies will naturally have
little resistance to this mite, and will need three injections of Ivermectin to get their coats to come
back in. If the problem won't remedy itself, I will give a full refund of the purchase price upon request.

Well, that's all about what I want to say about new home puppy stress. I hope it will help most of you
new mommies and doggie daddy's out to achieve a smooth and loving landing toward your little Chi
from me. If not, make sure your landing gear is down. You might have to call in for some foam for the
rough (ass)fault landing your going to have, brought on by the stress of it all....Ouch! Get the ear plugs!
